Abstract

Evaluation of kinesiophobia and associated factors in elderly living in nursing homes

Year 2023, Volume: 12 Issue: 2, 294 - 303, 23.06.2023

Abstract

Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate kinesiophobia (fear of movement), its causes and related factors in individuals living in nursing homes. Materials and Methods: The research was conducted with 86 elderly individuals who met the inclusion criteria living in the Nursing Home Elderly Care Rehabilitation Center located in the city center of Konya. Data were collected with a personal information form, Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale, Kinesiophobia Causes Scale, Berg Balance Scale and Sit and Stand Test. Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test and linear regression model were used to evaluate the data. Results: The average Tampa Kinesiophobia scale score of elderly individuals living in a nursing home was found to be 43.72. When the causes of kinesiophobia were examined, the scale score in the biological domain was found to be higher. As a result of the regression analysis, it was determined that the factors associated with kinesiophobia were the use of assistive devices to move, the constant use of drugs, the state of having balance problems in daily activities, and the Chair Stand Test score. 53.4% of dependent variable can be explained by the model created. Kinesiophobia was found to be high in elderly individuals living in nursing homes. Conclusion: Kinesiophobia is higher in individuals who use assistive devices, constantly use drugs, have balance problems, and have low lower extremity strength. In the comprehensive geriatric evaluation of elderly individuals, kinesiophobia should also be focused, and individuals should be informed about the importance and causes of kinesiophobia.
