Abstract

BIRTH IN DISASTERS

Year 2024, Volume: 5 Issue: 1, 54 - 66, 30.04.2024

Abstract

Recently, disasters have been increasing both in the world and in our country. Improving maternal and newborn health in a disaster setting is difficult. Due to the focus on the general group, the needs of special groups such as pregnant women, women giving birth or breastfeeding, or newborns can be ignored. A general disaster plan is not sufficient to meet the needs of the obstetric unit. Therefore, a multidisciplinary obstetric disaster plan is needed. However, it is also important to know how to access birth kits distributed by organizations such as UNFPA in areas where there are no health facilities or where it is difficult to reach. Since saving human life is a priority in disasters, there is a need for plans involving health professionals in a specific issue such as obstetrics. The members of the disaster management team vary according to the needs of the communities. In this respect, it is important to have midwives in the disaster. In this context, the aim of the review is to increase awareness about creating an obstetric disaster plan, to help create an obstetric disaster plan in health institutions, to emphasize the roles of the midwife in the obstetric disaster plan, to explain how to access the birth kits in a disaster environment, to explain the roles of midwives during disasters, and to guide further studies.
