Year 2020, Volume: 7 Issue: 3, 494 - 499, 27.12.2020

Abstract

Objective: The aim of our study is to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the information provided by the videos about the maxillary expansion on the Youtube video platform, which is an internet information resource for patients.
Material and Methods: A video search was performed on the Youtube video platform with three keywords determined using the Google Trends application. After ranking according to the number of views, a total of 90 videos were examined, including the first 30 videos for each term. After the application of exclusion criteria (video language not being Turkish, being repetitive content, audio or title information being unrelated to the subject, being only advertising content, being longer than 15 minutes, being related to other orthodontic treatments, having at least 3 sections) the remaining 16 videos were evaluated. Regarding the videos, the number of views, the number of likes, the number of dislikes, the number of comments, the video duration, and the time elapsed since the upload date parameters were recorded. Videos are divided into three categories according to the upload source and the quality of the information content. Statistical analyzes were performed using the Stata / IC computer program using Shapiro-Wilks, Kruskall-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U and linear regression (with Backward method) tests. Statistical significance value was accepted as p <0.05.
Results: When the videos were evaluated according to the upload source, it was found that 4 videos were uploaded individually, 7 videos were uploaded by doctors and 5 videos were uploaded from commercial sources, and their subscriber numbers were significantly different from each other (p <0.05). When the videos were evaluated according to the information content they provided, it was found that 4 videos had poor quality information content, 4 videos had medium quality information content and 8 videos had good quality information content, and their video durations were significantly different from each other (p <0.05). It was observed that only 12 of the 90 videos watched (13.3%) provided medium-good quality information. In addition, according to the regression test analysis, it was determined that the parameter affecting the number of views was significantly liked (p <0.05).
Conclusion: Youtube videos are insufficient as a Turkish source of information for maxillary expansion treatment. Healthcare professionals should be aware of online platforms for patients to access accurate information.

Maksiller Ekspansiyon İçin Bilgi Kaynağı Olarak Youtube’un Video Analizi ile Değerlendirilmesi

Year 2020, Volume: 7 Issue: 3, 494 - 499, 27.12.2020
