Duration Of Mothers Breastfeeding And Possible Factors Affecting It

Abstract

Introduction: Breast milk is the best form of nutrition for babies. In this study, it is aimed to determine the duration of breastfeeding of mothers' babies and the possible factors affecting it.
Method: This cross-sectional, retrospective study was carried out between February 1. 2022 and April 30. 2022. A total of 400 people who gave birth between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2019 attended. The data were collected by calling the hospital phone with the data collection form prepared from the literature. Statistical analyzes were performed using the SPSS version 19.0 for Windows.
Results: The mean gestational age of the participants in the study was 28.6±5.4 years. The pregnancy pattern of 98.8% of women is singular. 55% of the participants gave birth by cesarean section. 77.3% of mothers breastfed within the first 1 hour after birth. 55% of babies were exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months. During the neonatal period, 78.3% of mothers breastfed their babies as they cried. The rate of breastfeeding for 24 months and over is 48%. The average duration of breastfeeding is 19.4±9.7 months. 20.5% of the mothers stopped breastfeeding because the baby did not want to continue, 14.5% did not have enough milk, 9% got pregnant.
Conclusion: The duration of breastfeeding, the rate in the first hour after birth, and the rate of exclusive breastfeeding were found to be higher than the Turkey Demographic and Health Survey reports, but not at the level recommended by WHO. The most important reasons for discontinuation of breastfeeding were ‘the filling of the process’, ‘the unwillingness of the baby’ and ‘the lack of breast milk’. It was found that the total breastfeeding duration of mothers who fed their babies with only breast milk for the first 6 months was longer than mothers who fed them with other foods.

Abstract

Giriş: Anne sütü bebekler için en iyi beslenme şeklidir. Bu çalışmada annelerin bebeklerini emzirme süresi ve bunu etkileyen olası faktörlerin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
Yöntem: Kesitsel, retrospektif türde dizayn edilen bu çalışma 1 Şubat 2022- 30 Nisan 2022 tarihleri arasında yapılmıştır. 1 Ocak 2018- 31 Aralık 2019 tarihleri arasında doğum yapmış 400 kişi katılmıştır. Veriler, literatürden hazırlanan veri toplama formu ile hastane telefonundan aranarak toplanmıştır. İstatistiksel analizler SPSS versiyon 19.0 for Windows kullanılarak yapılmıştır.
Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılanların gebelik yaş ortalaması 28,6±5,4 yıldır. Kadınların %98,8’inin gebelik şekli tekildir. Katılımcıların %55’i sezaryen ile doğum yapmıştır. Annelerin %77,3’ü doğumdan sonraki ilk 1 saat içinde emzirmiştir. Bebeklerin %55’i ilk 6 ay sadece anne sütü ile beslenmiştir. Yenidoğan döneminde annelerin %78,3’ü bebeklerini ağladıkça emzirmiştir. 24 ay ve üzerinde emzirme oranı %48’dir. Emzirme süresi ortalaması 19,4±9,7 aydır. Annelerin %20,5’i bebeği istemediği, %14,5’i sütü yetmediği, %9’u hamile kaldığı için emzirmeyi kesmiştir.
Sonuç: Emzirme süresi, doğumdan sonra ilk bir saat içindeki emzirme oranı ve sadece anne sütü ile beslenme oranı Türkiye Nüfus ve Sağlık Araştırması raporlarına göre yüksek bulunmuştur ancak WHO’nun önerdiği seviyede değildir. Emzirmeyi kesmenin en önemli nedenleri arasında ‘sürecin dolması’, ‘bebeğin istememesi’ ve ‘anne sütü yetersizliği’ yer almıştır. İlk 6 ay sadece anne sütü ile bebeğini besleyen annelerin toplam emzirme sürelerinin diğer besinlerle besleyen annelere göre daha uzun olduğu bulunmuştur.
